1999 Travels March 30

TUESDAY 30 MARCH     HOME

I went to the doctor in the morning, for a routine check and script repeats. He is happy with my blood pressure, and even more happy that I have lost 7kg of weight since he last saw me!

Drove to Chirnside Park shops, to put the several rolls of film I had taken at the wedding, into the good shop there, for processing.

I then went on to my old school, to catch up with some of the former colleagues I’d missed seeing the other day. Sat in on a Senior Management Team Meeting – just like it used to be!

My visit was interrupted by a phone call from John – the dogs had gotten out and I was to go home immediately and help look for them! So I raced home, to find that it was only P and K’s little dog that had gone. She had somehow gotten out through the fence beside the pool, while John was cutting the cypress back further. There was much panic, and hunting up and down the street. She is so small she could have been hiding in any one of the front gardens and we’d miss her. She is totally disobedient about coming when called, at the best of times.

Then the lady from next door came out and said she had seen her at the doctor’s surgery, behind our place. They had taken her over the road, to the vet’s, where we went and picked her up. Apparently, at one stage she’d been running in the very busy main road there!

We were very relieved to get her back – John had been petrified. It would have been a major embarrassment to have lost P and K’s dog while they were on their honeymoon!

John finished his pruning, including along the fence behind the rented unit. I spent the rest of the day cleaning up a great mass of cut vegetation, after him. He had almost finished when the tenant came home. We had not met him before.

Late in the afternoon, John went and fetched the van back and we parked it back in its spot. I wiped the fridge out with vanilla water, and left the door open to try to get rid of the horrible smell.

Just before teatime, John went out to buy some wine, and Truck boiled – in that short distance. So it would appear that our problem is not coolant. It is intermittent, and very worrying.

Tea was soup and salad.

I was very tired at night – not used to these domestic exertions.

MONDAY 29 MARCH     HOME

The van was to go to Trakmaster today. We had no problems hitching it up to Truck, in the driveway – unlike the day, over a year ago, when we left from here! It will be there for two days. The brake linings need replacing, which was a bit of a surprise. They are bracing the fridge in place. The main item is that we are having a solar panel installed on the roof. The van was wired for this, when being built, so it should be a straightforward operation.

The fridge is back, there. Apparently, there was nothing wrong with it, after all. The switch in the van, where we can turn it on or off, had broken, so that is being replaced. I think the fridge man was rather dumb not to have checked out something that simple, before he took the thing away with him! Apparently, he has kept it closed – all this time – and it really stinks inside. How stupid is that? This is also the man who does the solar power – hope he is more competent with that……..

While John was gone, I cleaned the house oven – which took ages – then did some gardening.

John also took the annexe roof to the canvas place in Ringwood, to repair a small tear that happened one day, in wind.

Tea was steak, mushrooms and salad.

The house TV screen seems so large, after the van one!

SUNDAY 28 MARCH     HOME

K’s grandparents came to lunch. I put out assorted fillings and we all assembled our own sandwiches. We had a great chat. They are off driving back to Adelaide tomorrow.

After they left, we moved into the house the things we would need for the duration, while we are minding our own home!

John went and had a bowls practice. He refuelled Truck – 66cpl.

I did some weeding. There is plenty to do!

Tea was skinless franks, potato and other vegies.

SATURDAY 27 MARCH     HOME

The wedding day! All went very well. My son was extremely nervous. The bride was calm and organized and looked lovely. Both the service and reception were at the Tatra, up in Olinda.

It was a grey day – a little on the cool side, but great for photos. The rain held off until the reception had started and then it was steady all night. It was a most enjoyable occasion.

Scrubbed up better than in travel mode!

After the reception ended, about 6pm, we took a sister of John’s and her husband, and John’s daughter R and her friend, back home, where we had a light supper – hot cross buns and crumpets. The bride and groom spent the night at a city hotel, before flying off to the USA for their honeymoon.

After all had gone, John and I stayed in the house to sleep. Although our bedroom is quite crowded with some of our stored gear, we were able to fit in.

It feels really strange not to be sleeping in the van! But we have the animals around us again, which is lovely.

FRIDAY 26 MARCH   HEALESVILLE TO HOME     27kms

Today was moving day for the van. We had to pack everything up from scratch, as we’d had no time to prepare yesterday. As there had been much rain yesterday and through the night – the aftermath of the cyclone still – everything was wet. Later, at home, we spread the awning roof on the lawn to dry, and put out the table and chairs to do so, as well.

Drove home and had no problems parking the van in its old spot along the edge of the driveway.

As we were doing so, noticed that there was coolant coming out from under Truck. We were not sure if it was overheating, or if it was because of the slope on the driveway. John decided Landrover had overfilled it, and rang them to complain, but they said they do not touch the coolant on this service. Oh-oh! Could be ominous.

P had commenced her leave from work as of today, so she was getting final wedding things organized.

K drove to Tullamarine to collect his father and family who had flown in from Brisbane.

In the afternoon, I picked up my suit from the cleaners – it looks good.

We visited the motel in Lilydale where members of K’s family are staying, in order to see his Adelaide grandparents, who we have not seen since 1996. They seem to be ageing well.

P and K went out for a counter tea with the family. We opted for fish and chips, at the van. Much better! We have eaten at the chosen hotel before, and it was very forgettable.

It seems rather strange to be sleeping in the van in our own driveway. On rather a lean, too, but at least our heads are uphill!

THURSDAY 25 MARCH     HEALESVILLE

Today turned into one of catching up with assorted members of John’s family. It rained off and on, all day.

We set out to drive to the Landrover dealer at Frankston, as arranged on Monday, to have the new roof rack fitted. When we got there, they did not have it in – said it was not available as yet. No one had thought to contact us beforehand with this information! John was very annoyed. I was furious with them, and rather vocal about it! Absolutely rubbish service.

We did get the extended warranty documents certified for Monday’s service – it had not been done on Monday.

We continued on, as planned, to see a terminally ill sister of John’s, who lives in a retirement village in Rosebud. She walked us round some of the place – it seems excellent, with all facilities. We ate our packed lunch with her. Another sister and her husband – who also live there – called in to see us too.

Refuelled Truck in Mornington – 70cpl.

John phoned brother C, who – with wife Z – is visiting from Kempsey  with  yet another sister, at Mornington. They are a large family! We were asked to join them there for tea. C is always  so pleased to see us, of course. The brother in law arrived home from work about 7pm, and we all had fried rice for tea.

It was a very convivial evening, but it was very late when we got back to the van.

Drove 276kms today.

WEDNESDAY 24 MARCH     HEALESVILLE

The day was pleasantly warm.

We drove to our home. There, K and John pruned the cypress tree by the pool.

After lunch – a cut one we took with us – the three of us went bowling. K seemed to enjoy his bowls – he won!

John and I then walked around the Lilydale Lake.

I also extracted the suit I want to wear to the wedding from the wardrobe at home, and took it to the dry cleaners, to have it freshened up.

Back at the van, tea was a very tough rabbit, bought from the butcher in Healesville. I perhaps did not have time enough to cook it as long as I would have liked, but don’t think any amount of cooking would have redeemed that one!

There was a letter for us today, in the mail at home, from our friends at the Wonga Beach Caravan Park. They survived the cyclone earlier in the year, with no issues for them (they have much of their gear packed into a shipping container they bought after we left there). But most of the tree and palm canopy finished up on the ground. They write that the place seems very open now, but they hope it will quickly recover. It was pleasing to hear from them.

The night was extremely windy. This was the aftermath of Cyclone Vance, that severely damaged Exmouth when it came onshore, and since has rapidly moved south east across the country as a high wind system.

TUESDAY 23 MARCH     HEALESVILLE

After breakfast, I drove to the shops to get food for lunch – some salads, ham, salmon, bread, fruit.

V arrived mid morning. She looks well. I gave her the vest that I’d made her for Xmas, which may now be on the small side, but she seems to like it. We looked at her trip photos and, over lunch, heard all about the truck driving course she did last year, and their travels and time working at Hamelin Pool. She seems to be enjoying the wardrobe work at the Casino. After summer, they will resume their travels north again.

V had to leave mid afternoon, to drive to Frankston to collect B from visiting his sister. They have the loan of his father’s car.

It was a good, positive, visit. V seems happy.

Later in the afternoon, John drove to our doctor’s, where he had an appointment for a check up and to get some skin patches cut off again. Our doctor took a blood test, the results of which will come next week.

Tea was leftovers from lunch, preceded by soup.

MONDAY 22 MARCH     HEALESVILLE

John had phoned the Landrover dealership a couple of weeks ago, to book Truck in for a service, today, and to get the new roof rack that Landrover is supplying under warranty. This was arranged back in Qld.

So we had to get up really early. Left Healesville at 6.45am, to get Truck to Frankston for 8am. There was – being early peak hour – lots of traffic, so it was not a pleasant drive.

At the dealer’s, there was a mix up and initially they said we were not booked in at all. Not what we needed to hear! Then it got sorted out. Their courtesy car took us to the town centre.

We wandered the shops for a while. John bought a computer game – Alpha Centauri. I spent some time browsing in Myers. We ate lunch at a Greek cafe. At Lincraft, I checked out their Hardanger materials. Much looking through the day, but little expenditure – good!

V phoned us – on her mobile phone – so we found a public phone and called her back. She will come out to Healesville, to lunch, tomorrow. It was great to hear from her. She has been tripping around, visiting friends at Tallangatta and Rochester.

We walked back to the Landrover dealer’s – a decent walk. They say we have to bring it back later, on Thursday, to collect the new roof rack and have it fitted. Seemingly, it was beyond their powers of organization to have arranged this beforehand! That was not news we wanted to hear! While we were there, we paid the insurance on Truck, a rather hefty $850. That was on top of the $620 that the service cost. This is not a great time for bank accounts!

Drove back to Healesville in busy afternoon traffic.

After a more substantial lunch than we usually have, tea was soup and toast.

A tedious day! The round trip to Frankston was 195kms.
