2005 Travels March 15

TUESDAY 15 MARCH   CHARLEVILLE TO LONGREACH   520kms

Another hot day of driving. The road remained good – wide and smooth.

Lots of large truck traffic on the highways

Ate lunch at the well set up roadside stop at Tambo. Refuelled in that town too – $1.11cpl.

Set up for the night at the Gunnadoo Caravan Park in Longreach – $22. The parks up this way were still very empty.

We walked up to the Stockmans Hall of Fame. There, persuaded the lady in charge to display some of the Pungalina brochures. They are rather selective about what they display, clearly.

The brief time in the air conditioned building was blissful!

2003 Travels September 24

WEDNESDAY 24 SEPTEMBER   CLONCURRY TO LONGREACH   514kms

Today was John’s 63rd birthday and he spent it behind the wheel.

It was a very hot day of driving.

Refuelled at Winton – 96cpl. Don’t know why Cloncurry was so much cheaper.

Reached Longreach and called it quits.

Booked into the Gunnadoo Caravan Park and decided a rest day from driving was in order, so booked for two nights. $19.80 a night, after discount.

John had intended we should detour via Canberra on the way home, to see daughter, but they had headed off to Sri Lanka for a holiday, so we would head straight home. I admired their determination – an overseas jaunt with a six month old was a rather brave undertaking!

We had no special celebration of the birthday. John would, as usual, buy himself some new tool or machine when he was home, as his present.

2000 Travels May 19

FRIDAY 19 MAY   RUBYVALE TO LONGREACH   409kms

The day did not look promising.

We packed up, hitched up and got away alright, in the rain and mud.

It was a pleasant enough drive back through the range country and on to Jericho, where we stopped again to eat lunch.

Stopped again, briefly, in Barcaldine, to have a look at the Tree of Knowledge. This ghost gum was supposed, during the 1890’s Shearers’ Strikes, to have been the site of meetings from which grew the ALP. It was right outside the railway station.

From there, we pressed on to Longreach, through mostly flat black soil and Mitchell grass country. The weather did not improve as we headed west.

Threatening skies between Barcaldine and Longreach

Booked into the Gunnadoo Caravan Park, on the eastern edge of town, not far from the Stockmans Hall of Fame. Cost us $17 for a powered site. It seemed quite a slick operation and a fairly large park. Due to the day’s rain, it was rather muddy. We paid for two nights.

As we only expected to stay a couple of nights, did not bother to put out the awning. We did have a cement slab where we could put the table and chairs, if it was fine enough to do so.

Tea was stir fried vegetables and rice.

I phoned K and left a message as to where we are.

About 8.30pm, we got quite a fright, when a big jet plane flew over us – very low! Only then did we realize we were right by the airport – and right under the runway approach.
